Burn-in of Subtitles in HDR
When working in HDR with subtitles files that have been created in another color space (e.g. REC 709 or P3 DCI) for Burn-in purpose, it is necessary to adjust their luminance in order to display them correctly on a HDR capable display device.
The colors management of the subtitles is done in the COMMAND PANEL > SETTINGS > CMS > TIMED TEXT:
Subtitles Color Management Settings
By default, the Color Space of the subtitles is set on ITU-R BT.709 and the GAIN is set on 400%, meaning a subtitle edited in REC 709 at 100 nits will appear in HDR 10 at 400 nits:
- To modify the Subtitle Luminance Gain, adjust the Slider or double click on the number to modify it.
In the example below the Subtitle Luminance Gain has been set to 250% to have subtitles at 250 nits in HDR10:

When working in Dolby Vision, the tone mapping chosen affects the rendering of the subtitles, therefore the value chosen for the GAIN in the Timed Text color management will always appear a little different when the tone mapping is activated. It is recommended not to apply the tone mapping when making changes in the Timed Text Gain.

Some televisions are clipping the luminance and therefore the differences in the subtitle's gain are not always noticeable on the TV screen. Always control the luminance on the Waveform.
